I’ve been using iPhone 18 Pro for the past week after a full year as an iPhone Air user. And while there are advantages with each model, my main takeaway about iPhone 18 Pro so far is that it has zero compromises. Here’s what I mean.
iPhone 18 Pro: The best camera system, battery life, and performance
If you want to buy a new iPhone, chances are the iPhone 18 Pro is a strong contender.
I’ve had mine for a week now, a Burgundy model that replaced my iPhone Air. And despite loving the Air a lot, it’s hard to match Apple’s no-compromise approach to the iPhone 18 Pro.
- Cameras are better and far more versatile on iPhone 18 Pro compared to the Air. Telephoto and Ultra Wide lenses are great for specific use cases, but even the Main camera is better on iPhone 18 Pro.
- Battery life is similarly impressive. I generally found the iPhone Air’s battery good enough for everyday use, and only needed to charge mid-day occasionally. But with iPhone 18 Pro I don’t even have to think about battery.
- Performance is fantastic too. The A20 Pro chip makes everything on the iPhone feel fast, and I’ve even noticed a more responsive Siri AI. Thanks to the vapor chamber, I haven’t had any issues of overheating either, which the Air sometimes struggled with.
I’m not a pro photographer, and if you want battery tests or performance benchmarks, my colleague Chance’s iPhone 18 Pro review has you covered. But after a week with iPhone 18 Pro, that word “best” keeps coming back to me.
iPhone 18 Pro (and Pro Max) pack the absolute best camera system Apple makes, have the best battery life, and perform better than any other models. I’ve even noticed smaller improvements: the better built-in speakers and Dynamic Island upgrades are highlights.
There are measurable differences in all these areas, but I also appreciate just knowing my iPhone has the “best” Apple offers in key areas that matter most. There’s no wondering: would these pictures of my family look better if I used a different iPhone? Would this slowdown have happened?
All the positives of iPhone 18 Pro aside though, I’ll admit that I’m still very intrigued by the forthcoming iPhone Duo.
iPhone Duo, like iPhone Air, will be compromised but so compelling
The iPhone Air and iPhone Duo share a lot in common. Besides having similar design traits, they also both have shortcomings.
Like my iPhone Air, the iPhone Duo will have a worse camera system than iPhone 18 Pro. Battery might be comparable but definitely worse than the Pro Max, and I suspect sustained performance will lag a bit too. iPhone Duo will also lack Face ID and the Action button.
Yet despite these compromises, I’m very excited to get my hands on the device.
That’s because it offers a lot of compelling innovations not found in iPhone 18 Pro. The foldable form factor represents arguably the biggest iPhone hardware change ever.
I’ve been enjoying my iPhone 18 Pro a lot. But guess what happened when I picked up the iPhone Air the other day?
I instantly said, “Wow.”
The Air’s thinness had become the norm for me after a year of use. But several days into using iPhone 18 Pro, I was able to find fresh appreciation for how futuristic the Air feels. And I suspect iPhone Duo will evoke similar feelings—not just for its design, but its utility too.
I’m excited to have an iPad-like experience with the iPhone that fits in my pocket. That’s true despite being admittedly torn about the downsides the Duo will bring.
The days of Apple offering a single “best” iPhone are gone. If you want a model with zero compromises, iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max seem fantastic. But for something more futuristic and unique, I still can’t wait to try iPhone Duo.
